Class of 2007
Nate Coggins (Football 1997-2001) - Though many great players have been part of the West Georgia football program, none have ever been more honored than Nate Coggins. A native of Atlanta, Coggins claimed a starting job during the first game of his redshirt freshman season in 1998. Before he was finished, Coggins became a two-time All-America, two-time All-South Region selection, and was three times named to the All-Gulf South Conference Team. He culminated his career as a Senior by being named GSC Defensive Player of the Year, the first ever such honor for a West Georgia player. Coggins also made an impact on the school's all-time record book. He holds the school record for most total tackles in both a game (25) and for a career (416), the career record for solo tackles (253), most fumbles recovered in a career (9), and most games started in a career (45). During his four years Coggins helped lead the Braves to two GSC titles, two NCAA Playoff berths, and a record of 36-10. Following his career, Coggins worked at UWG as a student coach while continuing his academic pursuits. He also played professionally in the Arena Football League.
Nick Price (Football 1998-2001) -
To appreciate the contributions of Nick Price to the West Georgia football program, all one must do is scan the pages of the school's record book. No player in school history ever made a greater impact than did Price during his four years in a Braves uniform. Price's many school records include, among others, most yards rushing in a game, season, and career; most 100-yard games in season (7) and career (14), and most consecutive 100-yard games (5). He also holds the school record for most career touchdowns (42) and most points (252). A native of Chattanooga, Tenn.,
Price made his first impact as redshirt freshman in 1998. As a sophomore he earned the first of three consecutive All-Gulf South Honors, and in 2000 and 2001 he was named All-South Region and All-America. During his four seasons the Braves captured two Gulf South Conference titles and twice played in the NCAA Division II Playoffs. After his career Price served one season as a graduate assistant coach at UWG
.
Melanie Shepherd (Women's Basketball 1997-2001) -
When West Georgia's women's basketball program was at its lowest point in the mid-1990s it was understood that the rebuilding process had to center on top players from Georgia high schools. The first such recruit, and the cornerstone of that effort, was Melanie Shepherd. A native of College Park, Shepherd came to UWG from Banneker High School in 1997. When she departed four years later, Shepherd had become one of only 10 players in school history to amass over 1,000 career points. Beyond her point production, Shepherd also earned All-Gulf South Conference honors and was an undisputed team leader. A four-year starter on the court, Shepherd also excelled in the classroom, winning a spot on the GSC Academic Honor Roll. Upon graduation, Shepherd entered the coaching profession at the high school level. At the time of her induction she was head coach at Pebblebrook High in
Cobb
County.
Abed Taha (Football 1997-2000) -
Though offensive linemen are often the overlooked stars on a football team, no one overlooked the accomplishments of Abed Taha during his playing days at West Georgia. A native of Orlando, Fla., Taha is among the most honored players in the program's history. He was a two-time first team selection to the All-Gulf South Conference Team, a two-time All-South Region honoree, and was twice named All-America. Taha's performance on the field translated into success on the field as he is among the few to earn championship rings from three GSC title teams. UWG's record during his career was an impressive 36-9. Since graduation Taha has enjoyed a successful business career in his native Central Florida.
