History of Music Talent Shows

In recent years, the District Art and Music Talent Showcase has become even better under the leader-ship of our own Dan Lewis. Actually, the Carrollton Kiwanis Club has been doing this sort of thing for a VERY long time! Before the Showcase, there was "Kiwanis Kapers," which included grade school kids. shows as fund-raisers. The first was in November 1951! Dr. David Wexler, later to become President of our Club, headed the effort. All the then many local schools in the county were invited to begin by holding their own shows to select an entry in the general competition. Dress rehersal was on November 8 and the actual show as on November 15. Eight schools sent contestants: College Street, Carrollton High, Burwell, Sand Hill, Smyrna, Unity (near Blackjack Mountain), Villa Rica, and Whitesburg. The show packed the West Georgia College Auditorium. The winners were the Holloman girls, the "Singing Sisters of Smyrna School." (That school was near Buck Creek, halfway between Carrollton and Bremen.) Incidentally, in those days, none of the schools had a twelfth grade.
